Malta is one of the Mediterranean's best scuba diving destinations. A small island with an oversized coastline, it packs WWII wrecks, cave systems, 40-metre reef walls and shallow beginner bays into an area you can drive across in an hour. Visibility routinely runs 25-40 metres, the water is warm from May to November, and English is the working language — which is why divers from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia and beyond keep coming back.
At Scuba Life Malta we're a PADI 5-Star dive centre based in Mellieħa, five minutes from Cirkewwa — the country's most-dived shore site. We run small-group guided dives, full PADI course pathways from Discover Scuba through Divemaster, and specialty and tec training on wrecks like the P29 and Um El Faroud.
Best dive sites in Malta
Cirkewwa
Twin wrecks (Rozi tug, P29 patrol boat), a swim-through arch and a reef wall to 35 m — all from one shore entry. The most-dived site in Malta for a reason.
Um El Faroud
A 115-metre tanker sunk as an artificial reef off Wied iż-Żurrieq. Broken into two sections, 18-36 m — the highlight for Advanced divers and wreck specialties.
Other favourites: HMS Maori (shallow WWII destroyer, Valletta), Għar Lapsi (cavern system, stingrays), Anchor Bay (shallow reef, easy shore entry). See the full dive-sites map for depths and levels.
When to dive Malta
- Peak season (June–October): water 22-27°C, visibility 25-40 m, 3 mm wetsuit. Book early — courses fill up.
- Shoulder (April–May, November): water 17-21°C, quieter sites, 5 mm wetsuit. Great for advanced training.
- Winter (December–March): water 15-17°C, 7 mm wetsuit or drysuit. Fewer divers, exceptional visibility on calm days.
PADI courses & guided diving
We teach the full PADI pathway. Most people start with a half-day Discover Scuba Diving to try it out, then book the 3-day Open Water Diver course to certify. From there, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, and specialty courses like Wreck, Deep and Enriched Air open up the deeper sites. Certified divers can join daily guided shore and boat dives, or bundle a dive pack.
