Gozo is Malta's smaller, greener sister island — and for divers, it's the reason many people cross the channel. The coastline is a series of limestone cliffs cut by caverns, tunnels and steep drop-offs, with three purpose-sunk wrecks at Xatt l-Aħmar and a tec-depth wreck (MV Hephaestus) just offshore. Sites are less crowded than mainland Malta, and the topography is more dramatic per metre than almost anywhere else in the Med.
From Scuba Life Malta in Mellieħa we run Gozo dive days year-round: 20-minute drive to the ferry, 25-minute crossing, then a short hop to the site of your choice. Boat and shore options both work — we'll pick based on conditions on the day.
The Gozo sites we love most
- Xatt l-Aħmar wrecks (Xlendi Tug, Karwela, Cominoland) — three deliberately-sunk wrecks in 20-42 m, a short surface swim apart. Karwela's staircase is the most photographed shot in Gozo.
- MV Hephaestus — a 68-metre freighter lying on her side at 38-48 m off Xatt l-Aħmar. Tec dive, spectacular when the visibility opens up.
- Inland Sea & Tunnel — a natural rock pool connected to open water by an 80 m limestone tunnel. Exit into a cathedral wall dropping past 50 m. Advanced divers only.
- Blue Hole & Azure Reef — the iconic Gozo shore entry: descend through a rock chimney, exit at 8 m onto the reef. Suitable for Open Water divers.
- Reqqa Point — deep wall dive with reliable pelagic action: tuna, amberjack, the occasional dentex.
Planning a Gozo dive day
- Best months: May-November for warm water and calm crossings. Xatt l-Aħmar and Reqqa Point are diveable most of the year.
- Format: two dives with a surface interval on the island. We handle transport, tanks, weights and the ferry.
- Level: Open Water for the Blue Hole and shallow Xatt l-Aħmar sites; Advanced for the wrecks and Inland Sea; Tec for Hephaestus.
